Top Questions

1. Where can I get a battery for my remote?

They can be purchased from Batteries Plus, Radio Shack, a drug store battery display or we can help you.

2. Can I program my own remote, key pad or wireless wall button?

Yes.  We can provide simple instructions.

3. What brand of motors do you sell and service?

We sell LiftMaster motors.  We can service any motor manufactured by Chamberlain.  LiftMaster is the most common model.  Custom Overhead Doors is also authorized to service Genie motors.

4. What does it mean when the light bulb flashes on my Chamberlain motor?

Four flashes mean something is blocking the photo-eyes at the bottom of each corner of your track.

5. Can I open and close my garage door if the motor is not working or the power is out?

Yes. Depending on the type of motor here is how.

1.        On a Chamberlain belt or chain drive motor; simply release the trolley on the motor rail by pulling down and back on the red release cord.

2.      On a Chamberlain screw drive motor, pull down on the red release cord.

With the assistance of the springs, the door should be light enough for the homeowner to open and close.

6. My door is very squeaky and noisy.  Can it be lubricated?

Yes, with white lithium spray with out silicon.  Please do not use WD40.  Start with the springs and check your rollers.  Make sure all of the hinges on the door are securely fastened

7.    Why doesn’t my motor do anything? Try these steps:

1.  It may not be receiving power.  Check to see that it is plugged in or that no breaker has been tripped.  Also check to see if the motor is plugged into a GFI receptacle.  It may have to be reset.

2.        Check to see that the photo-eyes are level and the eyes are unobstructed. The obstruction could be as simple as a spider web or leaf.  On Chamberlain products there should be single small amber or green LED bulb glowing on each photo-eyes?  If the green one is not glowing, there is probably an alignment or connection issue that is easy to correct.  If neither is glowing the problem is more serious & the photo-eyes replaced.  A service call will need to be scheduled.

3.      These LED lights will be red and green on a Genie motor.

4.      You may have had a power surge and the circuit board was damaged.  This can easily be replaced.

8. Should I try to adjust my own Garage door?

No.  Your door has powerful springs under tension.  Serious injury can be inflicted.  We can arrange a service technician to make adjustments to your garage door.

9. Can lightning damage my garage door motor?

Yes.  Lightning is probably one of the top reasons garage door operator need to be repaired or replaced.  A surge protector can shield your motor from all but the worst lightning strikes.  Custom Door & Gate can provide these.  The typical damage is to the circuit board, which can easily be replaced

10. My motor runs but the door does not move?

The motor may have a bad gear (the plastic teeth are stripped) or the door (handle on the trolley) is not attached to the motor.

11. My door will open, but will not close even if I hold the wall button down.

The RPM sensor is bad.  A service call will be needed.  Also check the photo-eyes.

12. All my motor does is buzz.  What is wrong?

On Chamberlain motors this usually means that the trolley is stuck or wedged against the stop bolt.  A service call will be needed to adjust the motor control settings.

13. What is R Value?

The ability of the doors insulation to resist heat flow.

14. What is Wind Code?

The method used to rate a doors ability to withstand wind pressure.  The higher the wind code rating, the stronger the door.  For example W4 is stronger than W2.

15. Which is better, a 1/2 or 1/3 HP motor?

A 1/3 HP motor can cope with most doors if the correct springs are used.   Heavier doors (wood) would benefit more if a 1/2 HP motor were employed.

16. My door and operator vibrate, how can I quiet them?

You can switch to a belt drive motor (the quietest) or we can install a vibration kit

17.  My door is opening without my pushing a button?

You may have a short in the motor or possibly a neighbor has a similar frequency to you operator.  Try reprogramming the remotes first.
